Today is Nelson Mandela International Day commemorating the birthday (July 18) of the African leader, and promoting a call to action:

“Mr. Mandela gave 67 years of his life fighting for the rights of humanity. All we are asking is that everyone gives 67 minutes of their time, whether it’s supporting your chosen charity or serving your local community.”

I love the concept and more importantly it reminds us that we can give back any day of the week. Mandela Day highlights the importance of simply being aware and considerate of the needs of others and finding a way to give our time and talents to help them. Sometimes with very simple actions we can make a world of difference for others.

Initiatives like Mandela Day help inspire individuals to take action toward making a positive impact. I hope to make my contribution toward Mandela Day this weekend and will post about it. What will you do to commemorate Mandela Day and help your family, neighbors, or community?
